What a great mantra that the health care professions have!
It can apply to us all whether we are just starting our new school year, or a new job, a new relationship, a new family or traveling on vacation. Wherever we find ourselves, we can take that posture and conspire with our own inner selves and notice how well we perform in becoming better persons, better friends, and having a better connection with our significant other.
We can be in a dilemma when we are facing a choice that will not give us much satisfaction no matter what we chose to do. Because of our decision. some people may take it the wrong way or may even suffer some pain. Generally when we say "yes" to one thing, we are saying "no" to another. For example, when we say "yes" to healthy living, we are saying "no" to an unhealthy way to live. This decision making dilemma challenges us everyday. Life can often be a mixed bag.
We may have to pray for the Wisdom of Solomon to resolve some dilemmas. One could come to therapy to sort out the consequences of an upcoming decision and come to some peace with such a decision.
As a therapist I do not tell a person what decision to make. I do not tell a person to choose one road or another. I help a person discover their own wisdom within their own heart and mind. There is hope for us as we grow: becoming more self-aware; finding that deep wisdom within us to make good decisions; and working toward doing less harm.
When Martin Luther King attended college, he made a 'C' in Speech class. He is now considered one of the great orators of the 20th Century!
Our wisdom will lead us to our truth. Therapy can be like a midwife helping us to birth that wisdom. That is one way we honor our own greatness.
